The autonomous fleet will still be small, compared with the over 2 million humans who drive for Uber.

Volvo and Uber aren't revealing what the planned purchase - set to run between 2019 and 2021 - will cost but they announced a $300 million alliance previous year.

Uber and its investors have been itching for some good news and it appears that this partnership with Volvo is a great signs for its future.

Combining Volvo's cars with Uber's self-driving system builds on their almost three-year relationship and comes as Uber's autonomous driving unit has been hit by a lawsuit over trade secrets and the departure of top talent.

Uber partnerships chief Jeff Miller added: "This new agreement puts us on a path towards mass-produced self-driving vehicles at scale".

The XC90 SUVs are to be "base" vehicles, which incorporate a degree of autonomous capability but which are created to have Uber's proprietary driverless tech added on top.

The company is also testing the auto in Arizona, San Francisco and Pittsburgh along with a safety driver to help refine and improve their software.

"We get support developing this vehicle", Volvo Cars Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson said in an interview.

Uber would not share financial information about the project, and Volvo did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

Uber was thrown into disarray earlier this year when Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew its licence to operate in the British capital due to concerns about public safety for passengers and the process of driver registration.

Bloomberg reports that Uber is going to buy these vehicles from Volvo between 2019 and 2021.

Competitor Waymo recently announced plans to begin its own autonomous ride-hailing service, which may be the reason for Uber accelerating its plans, Tech Crunch reported. The potentially massive new investment would change Uber's way of doing business, and make it less reliant on a fleet of contractors.
