World no. 2 Roger Federer, who had an incredible form on court throughout the year but received a season-end defeat from David Goffin in the semi-final match of the ATP World Tour Finals, has said he couldn't wait to get back on court in Australia.

He played calmly and intelligently to beat Belgium's David Goffin 7-5 4-6 6-3 in a superb climax to the season.

He will end the year as world number three - behind only Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer - but crucially Dimitrov believes he is now "locked-in" for an assault on grand slams.

Although Dimitrov - making his first appearance at this event in 2017 - broke straight back, Goffin raced into a 40-0 lead on his way to restoring his advantage by winning the next. But lost his serve for just the third time all well as he was pegged back by the American No 1, who found his A-game.

"Next year I think is going to be obviously pretty interesting, especially the beginning of it", he said.

But he wasted four break points in the opening game and they would turn out to be his only chances in the decider.

Yet rewind two years and he was struggling to play three good points in a row, let alone challenge for big titles. He leveled in the eighth game before breaking once more in the 12th to snatch the set, despite Goffin hitting eight more winners.

Win Tim took a late break in the deciding set.

It was not the grand slam title he wants most but the next best thing and it felt like a breakthrough moment for a player widely perceived as one of the game's under-achievers.

The Bulgarian took the second of them with an inch-perfect forehand down the line to serve for a place in the final, which he secured with his fourth match point. "I proved to myself that I can do it". "Then the semi-final, to beat Roger for the first time here in such a big event, big tournament, it was the flawless moment", Goffin, who beat a hobbling Nadal on Monday, said.

Goffin saved three match points to ask Dimitrov the serve it out, but he kept his composure to seal a famous win on his fifth match point, although he was given a helping hand as the Belgian dumped a simple-looking volley into the net.

The largest prize in ATP World Tour Finals history is up for grabs for Roger Federer at the O2 Arena this weekend.

"It was a tough game [at 2-3] and I was a little bit exhausted in the third". In the second, I had some opportunities to come back, to break back, but he was really solid. At 3-0 in the second set, Goffin was digging his heels into the game. "This has always been, again, a dream of mine".
