Trump Delays Change in Elephant Hunting Policy

  • Ellen DeGeneres: 'Donald Trump is encouraging Americans to kill elephants'

However, the federal agency responsible for the ban still has on its website that it will issue permits for trophy hunting.

Trump's administration on Thursday said it would allow game hunters to enter the United States with trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia. Animal advocates have refuted those claims.

Royce, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in the statement Friday that "Zimbabwe is in economic and political crisis". "Furthermore, I am not convinced that elephant populations in the area warrant overconcentration measures".

Earlier on Friday, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended Trump's original repeal of the ban, saying, "This review established that both Zambia and Zimbabwe had met new standards, strict global conservation standards that allowed Americans to resume hunting in those countries".

Obama imposed the ban to help save elephant and lion populations in Zimbabwe and Zambia. Where 5 million of the giant pachyderms once roamed African savannahs, there are now just 400,000. Elephant ivory remains a coveted commodity in China and across Asia, where it is used for ornamental carvings.

Groups who have opposed the ban for years have claimed that allowing the hunting of some big game animals can actually contribute to conservation and the overall health of the herd.

The Trump administration just lifted an Obama-era ban on elephant hunting
The Fish and Wildlife Service has been talking with wildlife officials in Zimbabwe since the ban was announced in 2014. The news came the same week Zimbabwe had a coup that left its president, Robert Mugabe, under house arrest.

"(It's) a great travesty for elephants", Tanya Sanerib Sr., with the Attorney Center for Biological Diversity, said.

A growing number of countries, including China, Singapore and the USA, have banned the trade in ivory.

Public outrage against the administration's original decision to overturn the Obama ban was not limited to the US. "They pay loads of money to pick from a menu of what animals they want to kill and a guide basically takes them right to it - zero bravery and not much actual skill involved".

She added, "Your shameful actions confirm the rumors that you are unfit for office".

The pause on certain elephant trophy imports comes around the same time as another controversial Fish and Wildlife decision: ABC News reports the service began issuing permits to import trophies from African lions hunted in Zambia and Zimbabwe last month.
