In a freakish 18-hour operation, a team lead by Dr Xiaoping Ren of Harbin Medical University in China allegedly carried out what is being termed as the world's first human head transplant on a corpse, reported The Telegraph.

He made the claims at a conference in Vienna but did not give any proof of having carried out the path-breaking surgery.

The head of a dead man has been attached to the neck of another corpse in a test run for the world's first body transplant on a living person, a controversial neurosurgeon said yesterday.

"Canavero cites studies on animals to support his plan, but other doctors say that, 'You're not going to jump from rodent to human" and that Canavero's plan is "criminal", Newsweek reported.

Valery Spiridonov, a Russian tech scientist, reached out to him saying that he was willing to participate.

Professor Canavero added that the team's next move was to make full head exchanges between dead brain organ donors.

Aston Martin Valkyrie: Track version of auto designed by Adrian Newey
Andy Palmer, Aston Martin CEO, added: " Valkyrie has always been about pushing the limits and redefining the possible". The output of the Rimac Energy Recovery System remains unchanged, but its control systems will be re-programmed.

Arthur Caplan, director of medical ethics at New York University's Langone Medical Centre, had previously said that the bodies of head transplant patients "would end up being overwhelmed with different pathways and chemistry than they are used to and they'd go crazy".

Professor Canavero has gained fame and some notoriety for his controversial claims about the first head transplant.

Spiridonov had volunteered because he suffers from Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, which causes severe spinal muscular atrophy, and he was willing to try anything to prolong his life. Everyone said it was impossible.

A scientific paper explaining how he did it is expected to be released in the next few days.

But not everyone is convinced Professor Canavero could actually ever achieve a successful head transplant. According to the Italian, the monkey survived the transplant without any neurological injury for 20 hours before being euthanized for ethical reasons.
