On Thursday afternoon, Richardson police arrested the mother of a toddler found dead in a culvert near her family's home last month.

While Wesley Mathews's story changed twice between the time his daughter was reported missing and when he was brought up on felony charges for injury to a child, Sini Mathews's story has remained the same. Sini Mathews is the mother of Sherin Mathews whose body was found in a ditch near the parents' home October 6.

In Wesley's initial interview with police in the days after Sherin's disappearance, Wesley had said he put Sherin outside as punishment for not drinking her milk.

Mathews changed his story, later telling police he tried to get Sherin "to drink her milk in the garage" in the middle of the night but she would not comply. The Kochi native told the police that the child choked on milk he was trying to make her drink in the early hours of October 7.

However, this new affidavit shows that, on October 23, Wesley admitted to police he "grew impatient" over Sherin's refusal to drink her milk on October 6 and "decided to leave" Sherin home and "go out to dinner", telling Sini Mathews and their biological daughter to "come with him".

According to Richardson PD, Sini and Wesley Mathews placed Sherin in "imminent danger of death, bodily injury, or physical or mental impairment" by leaving her home alone that evening. A receipt showed only one child's meal had been purchased, the affidavit stated.

In a statement, attorney Mitch Nolte confirmed that he escorted Sini Mathews to the police department but didn't comment on the case against her.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the cause of death. For now, Sini Mathews is being held on $250,000 bond. He's a Dallas native and a graduate of the University of North Texas.

Police said she and her husband left their 3-year-old adopted child, Sherin Mathews, home alone while they went to dinner just hours before they claimed she had disappeared.

Sherin's death prompted External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to ask the Indian Embassy in the USA to be actively involved in the case and keep her informed.

Wesley remains jailed on $1 million bail. When her adoptive parents returned, she was "still in the kitchen".

Sini Mathews was in court as recently as Monday asking for custody of the couple's child to be returned to her, but that hearing was rescheduled 1 p.m. November 29. Authorities meant to place this child in the care of family in the Houston area.
