  • Russia Demands that US Respect Agreement on Antiterrorism in Syria

Russian Federation said Tuesday it is talking to the United States about renewing the mandate of experts working to determine who was responsible for chemical weapons attacks in Syria, but the US says Moscow won't consider the American draft resolution. The US draft text received 11 votes in favor, while Russian Federation and Bolivia voted against it and China and Egypt abstained.

Russian Federation and the USA have failed to resolve a dispute over extending the mandate of a UN-backed investigative team that blamed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces for a chemical weapons attack in April that killed more than 80 people.

After almost two weeks of negotiations, the two sides failed to bridge differences and the United States called for a vote on its draft resolution.

The United States and Russia, Syria's ally, have put forward rival draft resolutions on renewing the mandate of the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM), tasked with investigating Syria's toxic gas attacks.

"Russia is doing everything possible to prevent that from happening", he said. Apart from Russia, Bolivia also opposed the resolution, while China and Egypt abstained from voting.

France, which voted in favor of renewing the mandate for the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM), also expressed alarm.

Russian Federation has sharply criticized the JIM after its latest report blamed the Syrian air force for a sarin gas attack on the opposition-held village of Khan Sheikhoun that left scores dead.

Russia's move drew harsh criticism from US Ambassador Nikki Haley, who said Russian Federation had struck a "deep blow" to United Nations efforts to identify those using chemical weapons and deter future attacks.

President Donald Trump urged the council to support the panel's continued work, saying on Twitter that this would "ensure" that President Bashar al-Assad's "regime does not commit mass murder with chemical weapons ever again".

Previous reports by the JIM have found that Syrian government forces were responsible for chlorine attacks on three villages in 2014 and 2015, and that the Islamic State (IS) militant group used mustard gas in 2015.

Whereas the Russian draft provided for improvement of the JIM's work, the USA insisted to leave things as they were.

"Peskov added, ". We are talking about the countries that are the guarantors of the Syrian peace process, the agenda is Syria".
