According to Deadline, Amazon has officially acquired the TV rights to The Lord of the Rings based on the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. Peter Jackson turned the books into a trilogy, but Amazon doesn't necessarily have to abide by that structure.
With its fantastical setting and characters, "The Lord of the Rings" bears a superficial resemblance to HBO's "Game of Thrones", now one of the biggest shows in the world. Amazon says that the new deal also includes the ability for them to potentially make spin-off series too.
Tolkien estate and HarperCollins representative Matt Galsor said the series will "bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien's original writings".
The show, which will be available exclusively on Amazon's Prime Video, will be produced by Amazon Studios, in cooperations with Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros.
There's no cast or premiere date yet, but the series will eventually stream on Amazon Prime. On one hand, they are attractive pieces of digital artwork that do a very good job of showcasing the material.

All of them are going to sport a high screen-to-body ratio and there is also going to be an LCD model included. If true Apple may use the device's displays to differentiate between high-end and mid-range models.
The rumour of a Lord of the Rings television show caused a hell of a lot of fanfare. If you're familiar with the extended universe, you'll know this likely means an adaptation of "The Silmarillion", where Tolkien documented pretty much everything you've never thought you wanted to know about Middle Earth.
So could a Lord Of The Rings revival become our next fantasy fix after Game Of Thrones' final season?
Whatever Amazon chooses to adapt, it certainly won't be hurting for material.
But with that many parties in on the bidding, it's unlikely that the cost went down for Amazon-especially when you consider that Apple has also been lurking in the shadows of Hollywood, making strategic content deals that would give the iPhone-maker family-friendly programming to bundle into its Apple Music streaming service. To date, most of Amazon's original series have had an art-house or indie ethos to them.
