  • The marriage debate is about nothing more or less than whether fellow human beings can be allowed equality says Bill Hoffman

Thirteen years after the Howard government changed the law to prevent same-sex marriage, Australians have now backed the historic social reform, with 61.6 voting "Yes" to 38.4 for "No".

After months of fierce debate on both sides, supporters of marriage equality are expected to emerge victorious.

Almost 80% of the eligible voters took part. But nothing requires the MPs to vote according to the survey. Around three-quarters of the electorate - more than 12.6 million people - took part. According to the latest estimate, 78.5 per cent of eligible voters had returned a ballot as of Friday.

The bill will be introduced in to the Senate on Wednesday for debate on Thursday and the Labor leader, Bill Shorten, has offered the opposition's support to help "stare down the conservatives seeking to delay marriage equality".

David Kalisch from the ABS delivered the wonderful news during a news conference at Belconnen, a suburb in Canberra where the ABS is based.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics will announce the results of the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey in Canberra at 10am today.

Cabinet minister Matt Canavan argues the survey result, whichever way it goes, should not be seen as affirmation or rejection of the Smith bill.

We're expecting to hear from the No campaign as well, but they haven't made any public announcements about how they will respond to the news.

The competing bills are causing a schism within the coalition, with Treasurer Scott Morrison, who opposes same-sex marriage, saying in a radio interview on Wednesday that Smith's legislation doesn't contain sufficient protections for religious freedoms.

If the official count of the same-sex marriage survey matches myriad opinion polls, same-sex Australian couples will be able to marry by Christmas.

If Turnbull has fumbled a basic human rights issue that other comparable countries like New Zealand have already resolved just to appease a conservative but vocal minority faction fronted by ex-PM Tony Abbott, then he will have miscalculated the generosity Australians feel towards his increasingly tenuous government.

"I think Australians are going to come out in very strong numbers and send a message to the community that they want a more equal, more inclusive society".

"It would be emotionally hard for a lot of people. We would have to pick ourselves up".
