TripAdvisor has now started marking hotels and resorts that have recently been involved in acts of violence and causes for safety concern, according to The New York Times. But hotel experts warned the badges could be hugely damaging to hotels who had false or unsubstantiated claims made against them.

A designated committee of TripAdvisor employees will look through different responses and hotels and will mark them as "safe" with a designated badge.

TripAdvisor said it is creating a badge notification to apply to businesses to alert consumers of health and safety or discrimination issues at that business reported on within the media or other credible sources of information. "Accordingly, you may wish to perform additional research about this property when making your travel plans".

A spokesperson said the badges will decorate establishments' pages for up to three months.

"We have chose to introduce a new badge notification that will be displayed on a business's listing page when an issue relating to that business is reported on by credible media sources", Tara Lieberman, a TripAdvisor spokeswoman, tells Vogue. "'No, we're not going to call the police ma'am, '" Love told CBS News.

On the top of the page for Iberostar Paraiso Maya, a resort in the Playa del Carmen region of Mexico, for example, there is a message from TripAdvisor written in classic cautionary red.

But when Love posted her experience on TripAdvisor, she says it was deleted and that the site repeatedly scrubbed the content telling her it violated the company's "family-friendly" policies.

The 35-year-old woman said TripAdvisor had initially refused to post a review in which she claimed she had been dragged into the bushes by a hotel security guard and raped while staying at a resort on the Mexican Riviera in 2010.

He also said the badges were meant to inform people, not punish the hotel.

TripAdvisor is also rolling out a new policy on communicating with users about why reviews or forum posts are rejected.

Forum posts are regulated differently from reviews in that they do allow hearsay. Now, the website has incorporated changes in an effort to be more clear "about the reasons [a deleted] review doesn't meet guidelines and what part of it is in violation".
