Maraj, 38, was on trial for raping an 11-year-old girl on multiple occasions at his Long Island home. Jurors convicted him of endangering the welfare of a child and predatory sexual assault on a child younger than 13, Nassau County District Attorney Spokesman Brendan Brosh tells PEOPLE. Maraj, 38, could face up to 25 years in jail. The charges carry the potential for 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced December 14.
Defence attorney David Schwartz said in his summation that a lawyer for the girl's mother contacted Maraj's lawyer saying, "if she was paid $25 million, these charges could just go away".
Juror Arthur Naclerio, 67, of Massapequa, said the victim's testimony was the most convincing piece of evidence.
The assaults reportedly began in April 2015, about four months before Maraj married the children's mother.
She also told the jury Maraj warned her to keep the abuse a secret, Brosh confirms.
"The amount of evidence that we had that wasn't allowed in this case is unbelievable", the Garden City lawyer added. One juror told reporters that the young girl's testimony was hard to listen to.
The Associated Press does not identify alleged victims of sexual assault, and is not identifying the girl's mother to protect her daughter's identity.
The accuser, now aged 14, testified that Maraj sexually and physically abused her and ordered her to remain silent on his actions.
Maraj's ex-wife vehemently denied this allegation. Additionally, the defense said it might have been contaminated with different laundry. Civil attorney James R. Ray III briefly represented the mother and testified that he did demand $25 million from Maraj after he was arrested. The woman later fired him as her attorney. He will be sentenced on December 14.
The girl's brother, now 10, testified that he saw Maraj's "private parts" touching his sister after he walked in on the two of them in 2015 partially clothed.
