Currently, the toxic fidget spinners are still available both in toy aisles at Target stores and on its website. New research shows they can also be unsafe.
Bulls-i-Toy, based in Iowa, supplies Target with the fidget spinners. The lead level in another model, the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner in Metal, tested at 1,300 parts per million. The companies say products marketed to those over the age of 12 have no specific lead-level restrictions.
Due to its harmful effects on child development, federal laws limit the amount of lead in children's products to 100 ppm of total lead content.
But now a consumer advocacy group says two types of fidget spinners being sold at Target could be unsafe. But Target doesn't appear to be backing down, not even to claims that they should move the fidget spinners to another section of the store.
In an email to the researchers, Target's vice president of corporate responsibility said that the fidget spinners did not need to meet federal lead limits because they were not marketed as children's toys. "All of our product are tested and comply with [Consumer Product Safety Commission] safety standards".
