Florida State University indefinitely suspended its 55 fraternities and sororities Monday after the alcohol-related death of a freshman pledge and cocaine charges for another fraternity member.

The pause was necessary to "review and reflect on the loss of a young life", the university said in a statement Monday.

The suspension comes after a 20 year old Florida State University fraternity pledge died after a night of drinking.

"Unfortunately once medical personnel got here along with TPD, they determined the person to be deceased", said David Northway with Tallahassee Police Department.

FSU said the suspension also is in response to the arrest on Monday of a 20-year-old member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity for the sale and trafficking of cocaine.

"For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek life on campus".

UF officials say they have an alcohol coalition to educate students about being safe.

The suspension of Greek activities will prevent fraternities and sororities from such things as holding events for new members, holding council or chapter meetings, holding organized tailgates and holding socials. The university will allow students who live in fraternity and sorority houses to remain there.

Crackdown a tragedy for Gandhi family, says Smriti Irani
Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi had used the same image with a couplet in Urdu to target the government on one year of demonetisation: "Ek aansu bhi hukumat ke liye khatra hai".

"I think people just get too insane when they're partying and all of that", Jillian Bustillo, a UF student, said.

"Unfortunately we have got to take action with our partners and stakeholders, the students, to make sure that it doesn't happen again", he told WCTV.

The fraternity's national office suspended the FSU chapter's operations following his death, said Todd Shelton, a spokesman for Pi Kappa Phi.

Thrasher has also banned alcohol at all student organization events during the suspension.

"I think it could be a little bit of a wake up call to kind of spread awareness that they need to take precautions on what's happening. I think hazing is a problem and alcohol is the basis of a lot of their events", said Abygail Stiekman. FSU has more than 700 such organizations outside of the Greek community.

Florida State University President John Thrasher announced today he is imposing an indefinite interim suspension on all fraternities and sororities at FSU effective immediately.

"They must work with us and demonstrate they fully understand the serious obligation they have to exercise responsible conduct", Thrasher said. They also cannot have any organized participation in homecoming activities, which are scheduled for next week.
