Actual Headline: Sheep Recognize Obama

  • Sheep 'can recognise famous people's faces', including Baa-rack Obama

Sheep learnt to recognise Barack Obama after being shown his photo a few dozen times, said a study on November 8 which suggested our four-legged friends may be smarter than we think.

At one end of the pen, they would see two photographs displayed on two computer screens and would receive a reward of food for choosing the photograph of the celebrity, by breaking an infrared beam near the screen.

Over a series of four training sessions, the sheep's ability to choose a familiar face, represented by one of the four celebrities, over a completely unfamiliar face improved.

The study's authors first trained the sheep to recognize images of four celebrities: Barack Obama, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emma Watson and Fiona Bruce, chosen because there were lots of available images from lots of angles.

Many other animals are known to recognise the faces among their own species, while some - including macaques, horses, dogs, mockingbirds, and sheep - can identify individuals from other species too.

"We chose these people because there were lots of images of each person available on line, both front-on and taken at different angles", study co-author Jennifer Morton of the University of Cambridge told AFP. The sheep didn't do as well but still passed, recognizing the celebrities about 68 percent of the time - a drop in performance comparable to that seen in humans performing the same task. Maybe they just didn't like that the non-familiar lacked a reward, for example.

Saudi Arabia arrests 11 princes, including billionaire, in corruption crackdown
The 62-year-old is one of the largest shareholders in Citigroup and also owns stakes in News Corp and Twitter . The crown prince warned earlier this year that anyone guilty of corruption would be punished.

Morton and a team trained eight sheep to recognise the famous faces from a frontal photo of each of them.

In addition, they also say the study could help in the research into Huntington's disease, as well as other human brain disorders that affect mental processing.

Obviously the study focused on only eight domestic sheep, and it does mention some potential alternative interpretations of the data.

When the handler's face was shown, sheep picked it seven out of 10 times.

"This ability has previously been shown only in humans", the scientists write.
