Japan woman gets death sentence in partner serial killings

  • A Japanese woman nicknamed the 'black widow' been sentenced to death for killing her husband and two others

Judge Ayako Nakagawa of Kyoto District Court ruled Tuesday that Chisako Kakehi, 70, will hang for the murders of two common-law boyfriends and a husband, as well as the attempted murder of a fourth man, between 2007 and 2013.

"It was a heinous crime driven by greed for money".

"Even if I were executed tomorrow, I would die smiling", Kakehi said at the time. Her lawyers have filed an appeal against what they call an "unjust" verdict.

Due to a lack of physical evidence showing her involvement in the cases, with, for example, cyanide compounds that she is believed to have used not being identified, the focus of the trial was the court's judgment on circumstantial evidence collected by the prosecutors.

Prosecutors sought capital punishment while her defense counsel pleaded not guilty to the crime due to a lack of physical evidence, also arguing that she can not be held responsible as she suffers from dementia.

Since the death of his first spouse in 1994 as a result of illness, she would have been according to the press relations with a dozen men, six of whom have passed from life to death.

While dismissing the possibility of suicide, accident or the involvement of persons other than Kakehi in the cases, the judge said the accused took extraordinary acts, such as inheritance procedures, soon after the incidents.

Carter Page met with Russian government officials during 2016 trip
But he downplayed the significance of the meetings, telling the Times he had "a very brief hello to a couple of people". And people were asking him about this meeting back in 2016 where former campaign aide George Papadopoulos was present.

Kakehi was arrested in 2014 after her fourth husband, 75, was found dead in their home a month after the couple married.

Like the venomous spider that kills its mate after copulation, 70-year-old Chisako Kakehi formed relationships with elderly men and then tricked them into drinking cyanide to collect the insurance money, reports Kyodo News.

Nakagawa said Kakehi "made light of human lives" as she repeatedly committed the killings, adding that she offered "almost no words of apology" and had not reflected on her crimes. He died on Dec 28, 2013, only a month after their marriage.

Kakehi later registered with a matchmaking service, specifically asking to meet wealthy men with an annual income of more than 10 million yen ($87,900).

But later that week, she backtracked, saying she did not remember admitting to the killing.

The trial was held under Japan's lay judge system, which involves citizen judges.
