Australia proposes lawmakers prove they're not dual citizens

  • Stephen Parry the leader of the upper house will reportedly submit his resignation Thursday

"I want to say that this is not an audit", he told media in Canberra on Monday.

Alexander's office's claim that his father renounced is complicated by the fact that Australian citizenship only came into being as a concept in 1949 - two years before John Alexander's birth.

However, the prime minister - who announced a plan on Monday for all MPs to declare their citizenship on a public register - said he was not going to "start front-running this process" by second-guessing Mr Alexander's status.

Liberal backbencher John Alexander could be a dual citizen, leaving the Turnbull government without a majority in the lower house if he's forced to resign and face a by-election.

'The obligation is on each member and each senator to make a full disclosure as I have repeatedly said in recent times.

They would have 21 days from being elected to provide information about their country of birth, their parents' birthplace and citizenship.

"People should make their declarations and then cases can be referred", Mr Turnbull told ABC radio.

"To try and ensure Australians don't know the truth about the citizenship of members of parliament or the eligibility of his own MPs until next year, we don't think that's good enough", Senator Wong said.

Yemen's Houthi fire missile at Saudi Arabia's Riyadh
More than two years on, the war against Houthi rebels has turned into a quagmire for the kingdom and its Arab allies. Saudi Arabia claims the Shiite Houthi rebels are backed by its regional rival Iran.

Labor leader Bill Shorten said he was prepared to "engage constructively" with the prime minister at a meeting on Wednesday.

Deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce, Nationals senator Fiona Nash, former Greens senators Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters, and One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts, were all found to be ineligible to sit in parliament by the High Court last month, as they held dual citizenship at the time of their election.

However, he said he would not do anything that would stop the High Court from arbitrating on any issues which emerged from the disclosures.

"The question is: Are they still a citizen of that country?"

If they had been a dual citizen, the lawmakers will need to provide details and evidence of having renounced their foreign citizenship.

Numerous politicians had argued that they had not been aware they were dual nationals due to their parents or place of birth.

The declaration will be similar to members' interest statements, which means a politician would be in breach of privilege if the documentation is incorrect.
