FRANKFORT, Ky. Sen. Rand Paul's absence from the Senate while recovering from an assault in Kentucky creates another challenge for a slim Republican majority that's caused heartburn for its lack of unity at times, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday.

Kentucky State Police said in a news release that Paul suffered a minor injury when 59-year-old Rene Boucher assaulted him at his Warren County home on Friday afternoon.

Released on $7,500 in bail, Boucher, who was charged with misdemeanor fourth-degree assault, was ordered not to contact Paul or his family, and he is to stay 1,000 feet away, unless he's in his home (200 feet away).

On Sunday, Paul's chief of staff told the Washington Post Paul sustained five broken ribs, as well as bruised lungs, and that he is in pain.

Boucher's motivation in the attack is unclear, although some are linking his liberal beliefs (which he often shared on social media) to the crime, saying it may have been politically motivated.

"This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force", Stafford said in a statement to Fox News. Warren County Attorney Amy Milliken said further charges could be brought, based on the extent of Paul's injuries.

The winners, and the many losers, from higher interest rates
The consensus in the City is that there will be at least another 0.25% rate rise next year, and possibly a second. The Bank of England has increased its base rate for the first time in a decade from 0.25% to 0.5%.

"Two Kentuckians tell me Rand's neighborhood fracas stemmed from a dispute over some sort of planting or flora issue around the properties", Martin tweeted. Kentucky State Police say Paul had minor injuries.

At one point, Boucher was a practicing physician, even working alongside Paul, according to his lawyer.

But Paul, R-Ky., appears to be facing more than a "minor injury", according to updates from his office.

Voter records from March 2017 show Boucher registered as a Democrat.

David Habich, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said the agency was aware of the incident concerning Paul.

The FBI is assisting state and local authorities to see whether there were any violations of federal law, but an FBI spokesman declined to comment Monday on a possible motive.
