Astros' Yuli Gurriel makes racist gesture after hitting World Series home run

  • Major League Baseball Should Suspend Yuli Gurriel Force Others to Defend the Indefensible

Manfred also justified not banning Gurriel for the most meaningful games rather than next year's openers in a 162-game schedule because it would cost Gurriel salary money, he would not appeal the punishment and it would help move forward as Darvish desired.

Major League Baseball has chose to suspend Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel five games in 2018 for his racist gesture after hitting a home run off Dodgers starter Yu Darvish in the second inning of Game 3 of the World Series.

But even if Major League Baseball elects to suspend Gurriel, he's nearly certain to appeal, which likely would delay the process so that a decision isn't made until after the World Series.

"I didn't try to offend nobody", Gurriel said in Spanish through a translator.

"There's no question it's a hard decision as to when the appropriate timing was. I wanted the burden of this discipline to fall primarily on the wrongdoer", Manfred said.

The Cuban-born Gurriel pulled on the corners of his eyes after homering off Darvish during Houston's 5-3 win Friday night.

Following Manfred's announcement, the Houston Astros released another apology from Gurriel, who they insist is "extremely remorseful" over the incident.

Within minutes of pre-orders of the iPhone X opening on Apple's website , delivery times rose to five to six weeks. While some analysts give an edge for Android over Apple , others refuse the assumption that iPhone can be rivaled.

"Yes, of course. I want to talk to him because I have nothing against him", he said. I deeply regret it'.

For his part, Darvish called the gesture "disrespectful" after the game, and pointed out that "Houston has Asian fans and Japanese fans" too. The Astros and Major League Baseball pride ourselves on the diversity of our sport and in showing great respect to all cultures represented by our players, front office staff, fans and members of the media.

"It's important", Manfred said. He will also be required to undergo sensitivity training during the off-season, and the Astros will donate his lost wages to "charities supporting diversity efforts".

"He handled this in as classy a way as a player possibly could something as negative as this", Manfred said of Darvish. "Since we are living such a wonderful world, let's stay positive and move forward instead of focusing on anger".

Darvish is of Japanese and Iranian descent. The four-time All-Star played professionally in Japan from 2005-11 before joining the Texas Rangers in 2012. He was traded to the Dodgers at this year's July 31 trade deadline. 'Appropriately, Yuli has apologised for his gesture. "He had no intention of offending anyone, but now recognizes the perceived offensiveness of his actions".

The MLB has recently suspended players caught using slurs.

'That precedent is not adequate to deal with the current situation, ' Manfred said.
