Zinke's Interior Department Proposes Dramatically Raising National Park Entrance Fees

  • Utah national parks would charge $70 per car under proposed fee hike

Announced by the National Park Service Tuesday, the proposal would almost triple the prime-time entrance fee for both parks to $70 per vehicle from $25.

Under the proposed plan, the NPS would charge $70 per vehicle, $50 per motorcycle, and $30 per person during each park's peak visitation season, which most commonly runs from May to September.

And annual $80 passes for federal lands would not change, though fees would go up for pedestrians and motorcyclists.

The park service says revenue from the price hike it is considering at Acadia and 16 other popular parks during peak tourism season would be used to reduce a backlog in maintenance and infrastructure projects.

Joshua Tree National Park is the only site in the proposal whose peak season is not in the summer - camping in the desert in August is its own form of cruel and unusual punishment - but it's one of more than a dozen that would be affected by the new proposal.

Elected officials and park advocacy groups said they oppose the increase and encouraged residents to participate in a 30-day public comment period that opened Tuesday. The fee would allow access to the park for a year.

The fee increase would help pay for much-needed repairs across the park system, which has long suffered from damage and wear to buildings and infrastructure, according to the proposal.

The higher fee would commence next year if approved by National Park Service leaders.

Glacier and Yellowstone are on the list of national parks that could see a substantial increase in entrance prices.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke told CNN: "The infrastructure of our national parks is aging and in need of renovation and restoration".

"Targeted fee increases at some of our most-visited parks will help ensure that they are protected and preserved in perpetuity and that visitors enjoy a world-class experience that mirrors the wonderful destinations they are visiting", Sec.

Zinke said that the fees would go towards maintenance and improvements in the park, namely: maintaining trails, restrooms, roads, and campgrounds.

"What the heck?" said Joe Camacho, of Latino Outdoors, based in Seattle, a nonprofit that works to connect more Latino residents with outdoor recreation.

"We should not increase fees to such a degree as to make these places - protected for all Americans to experience - unaffordable for some families to visit", Theresa Pierno, president and CEO of National Parks Conservation Association, said in a statement.

"We think national parks should be fully funded through Congress at the level at which they need to be vibrant, healthy and sustainable", she said.

Pass holders - such as the America the handsome national parks and federal recreational lands pass or senior pass - would not be affected by the fee hike. Federal law requires that 80 percent of all entrance fees collected at a national park be spent on maintenance at that park. Even before then, in 2015, the parks were faced with major budgetary concerns, according to a report from Mother Jones, who wrote that it would cost the federal government $11.5 billion to fix numerous country's older public lands.
