The DPH says there are two main types of influenza virus - types A and B - that routinely spread in people and are responsible for seasonal flu outbreaks each year. "It is a choice, but we strongly encourage them to get immunized".

The provincial influenza program officially got underway on October 23 with flu shot clinics now available across Alberta including ones in Stettler. According to the weekly FluView report, local influenza activity was reported by five states - California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Oklahoma and SC - up from two states the previous week, while the US Virgin Islands and 38 states reported sporadic influenza activity. Flu is very infectious and can cause potentially serious illnesses especially for older people, those who have a chronic illness, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women. While it is recommended to get vaccinated early in the fall, later vaccinations - all the way through January - can still be beneficial. "In situations when there is an imperfect match to one virus, vaccination provides protection against other strains which may be circulating".

"Getting the flu shot every year is the best way to avoid getting the flu, so take time to get your flu shot", said Dr. Julie Vaishampayan, Stanislaus County Public Health Officer.

There are suggestions for helping contain the virus and keep it from spreading to others. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. In the home and workplace, disinfect phones, keyboards, door handles, and other commonly touched surfaces.

Cover your coughs and sneezes, and steer clear of those who are visibly ill. The CDC, Center for Disease Control, tracks the various strains of the flu and change the vaccines to help fight the most common strains that are found each year.

In addition to the clinics the SCHSA will offer flu vaccinations at their office at 820 Scenic Drive in Modesto.

In the 2016-17 flu season, just 30.1 per cent of hospital workers got the shot, according to a report presented at the Region of Waterloo's Community services committee this week.
