Dozens of worshipers were killed Friday when suicide bombers struck two mosques in an escalation of violence in Afghanistan that has left at least 150 people dead this week.

At least 55 people were also injured while praying at the Imam Zaman mosque in the western Dasht-e-Barchi section of Kabul.

Daesh - or the so-called Islamic State - militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack that follows a similar assault on another Shiite mosque on September 29.

Abdul Hussain Hussainzada, a Shia community leader in Kabul, voiced concern on the new campaign against the minority group.

The United States strongly condemned the October 20 attacks and previous attacks in Afghanistan during a week in which USA drones strikes were reported to have killed more than 30 militants in the region.

"We commend the government and security forces of Afghanistan for their response to these attacks, and we offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed", the spokesperson said.

Friday's second attack at a Shia mosque occurred in the central province of Ghor.

Iran will side with the Afghan nation and government regardless of certain trans-regional powers' will, the spokesman said, adding that Tehran will support Afghans "until complete elimination of violence, crime and insecurity".

IS have managed to establish themselves in the country, hitting those deemed to be against their extremist ideology.
