People carry on Saturday the coffin of police captain Ahmed Fayez, who was killed in a raid about 84 miles southwest of Cairo.

"A number of policemen" were killed in the operation, said the Egyptian interior ministry but did not reveal the exact casualty figures from the confrontation.

More anti-terrorism forces have been deployed to the area in an attempt to tackle the militants.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was scheduled yesterday to attend events in the northern town of El Alamein on Egypt's Mediterranean coast to mark the 75th anniversary of the pivotal Allied World War II victory in the Battle of El Alamein.

Terrorist attacks, mainly targeting police and military, increased after the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule. The insurgency has continued even as Egypt's military and police forces claim to have killed thousands of suspected terrorists.

Fifteen "terrorists" were killed or injured in the attack, state-run media outlet Ahram Online reported Saturday, citing the Interior Ministry. In recent months, another group called the Hasm Movement also has targeted security officials and judges, adding a deadly new dimension to the security threats facing the country.

The exchange of gunfire took place on Friday in the al-Wahat al-Bahriya district in the Giza governorate, about 135 kilometers, from the Egyptian capital.

One security source said the convoy was attacked from higher ground by militants firing rocket-propelled grenades and detonating explosive devices on the ground.

In their statements, none of the militant groups claim any affiliation to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The security forces are said to have launched an attack following a lead that eight suspected members of militant group Hasm were in the area.
