The research, which looked at causes of death in 2015, found overall pollution claimed nine million lives worldwide - one in six of all deaths - with air pollution accounting for 6.5 million.

While developed countries are far from immune from the hazards, their form of pollution are more "modern", like fossil fuel combustion and chemicals, while developing countries have biomass fuels.

The Lancet report notes specific areas of concern in Canada for First Nations in northern Alberta and Ontario due to oil and gas development and chemical manufacturing.

"In 2015, the greatest numbers of deaths due to pollution occurred in India (2.5 million deaths) and China (1.8 million)", the study said.

Most of these deaths were caused by non-infectious diseases linked to pollution, such as heart disease, stroke and lung cancer.

Relying on earlier studies of pollution and its health impacts, the report has estimated that water pollution, including that from unsafe sanitation, caused over 646,000 deaths in India, a third of the water pollution-linked deaths worldwide.

Philip Landrigan, a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York City, who jointly led the global research, said: "Pollution is much more than an environmental challenge - it is a profound and pervasive threat that affects many aspects of human health and wellbeing".
