London Metropolitan Police said a "collision" caused several injuries, amid local reports that a vehicle ploughed into a group of people near the Natural History Museum.

London Police said that a vehicle has been involved in a collision near the Natural History Museum, and one person has been arrested following the accident.

London Ambulance Service said 11 people were treated for injuries.

Police have launched an inquiry to trace the motive behind the incident.

Afra Wang posted a picture of emergency services on Twitter, writing: "A crime scene?"

Police have asked people to avoid the area while the investigation is underway, the mayor said.

Another who gave his name only as Leonard, told AFP: "I was near South Ken station and there were many police".

British Prime Minister Theresa May was being updated on the incident, according to her office.

'The whole road is closed off and there is a heavy police presence in the area and police helicopters in the sky'.

"A man...has been detained at the scene". She said she was told by police injuries sustained were minor.

"A number of people have been injured", the London Metropolitan Police tweeted Saturday.

Authorities said Saturday afternoon they aren't treating it as a "terror-related incident".

But while officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident - and stress the situation could quickly change - no clear evidence has yet emerged that would suggest it was terrorist attack.

Exhibition Rd, in one of London's most upmarket districts, is home to a host of museums and restaurants, as well as university buildings, and the streets are packed with tourists at the weekend.

The incident comes just months after an attack on London Bridge where a auto slammed into pedestrians left 11 people dead including the attackers.
