Trump Takes On NFL: Every Pregame Dedicates Time To President's Comments

  • TV Ratings: Sunday Night Football Down in Week 3

To come up with overnight ratings, Nielsen takes the percentage of households watching in 56 US markets and comes up with an overnight average - so an 11.6, for instance, means that 11.6% of households in those 54 markets tuned into the game on NBC on Sunday night.

NBC's ratings for the National Football League game between the Oakland Raiders and the Washington Redskins on Sunday night were slightly down from a popular week three match-up last season, although it was not known if this was linked to a controversy over NFL player protests during the USA national anthem.

That is an eight percent drop in viewership from the prior week's game when the Atlanta Falcons beat the Green Bay Packers, and a 10 percent drop from early numbers for last year's equivalent Sunday night game during the third week.

CBS said its overall game coverage on Sunday averaged 11.9 percent of households that tuned in, up 4 percent from last year's week three coverage. And, while Fox's Sunday coverage was also down from 2016, CBS year-over-year coverage was incrementally improved. Did this weekend's events have a dramatic effect on Sunday's games?

For whatever reasons people choose to attribute to the NFL's ratings stumble, now more than a year old and something that will surely continue this season, it is not a problem that can really be diagnosed over a single weekend - let alone one game.

Cruz Says He's Against GOP Health-Care Bill
When Smith asked Cornyn if he would be a no vote on Graham-Cassidy his question received a round of applause from the audience. Susan Collins, R-Maine, is leaning against the bill and Murkowksi is also a possible "no".

Trump's comments led to plenty of discussion on the National Football League pregame shows on Sunday and continues to be heavily covered on not just the sports networks, but the news networks as well.

Overnight ratings can give a glimpse of which way viewership is going, but don't always tell the whole story.

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a b*tch off the field right now, out, he's fired". The show began with a shot of the sidelines of the Ravens-Jaguars game in London that had already started, followed by cast intros and host Sam Ponder "introducing Trump's "son of a bitch" comment (with no bleeps) at an Alabama rally". At the Bears game vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers, visiting players chose to stay in the locker room during the playing of the National Anthem, with one exception being former Army Rangers and Steelers' player Alejandro Villenueva, who openly stood with his hand on his heart on outside the visitors' tunnel.

In fact, the figure is a measurement of all games that were shown to a national audience, which includes some games played on Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights.
