In the video, the victim said, "Hello Appa, people who suffered because of you have kidnapped me". Police had initially said Sharath could have gone on a Ladakh trip on his new motorcycle, but it turned out that his childhood friend and accomplices had kidnapped him for ransom and later murdered him after they realised that Sharath's parents have approached the police. The body was found when the police caught a chain snatcher, allegedly involved in the crime, according to a Times of India report.

The same day, he and his wife and daughter received a message on WhatsApp telling his parents to arrange Rs 50 lakh to pay his abductors as ransom.

The kidnappers killed Sharath after finding out that his parents filed a police complaint. Anxious parents of the automobile engineering student then got anxious and called him up but Sharath did not answer any of the calls.

Sharath N, the son of V Niranjan Kumar, was reported missing on September 12 after he failed to return home at night.

Police gave the names of the arrested as Vishal, who lived near Sharath's house and was acquainted with the victim's family, and Vinay Prasad, Vinod Kumar and Kiran Pai.

A few days later, when they saw that the body had floated to the surface, they tied more boulders and stone slabs to it and dumped it into the lake again. The police have said that his friend was among the kidnappers.

Vishal reportedly confessed that one of his associates, Shanth Kumar, a cab driver, had incurred a loan of ₹4 lakh and had asked Vishal's help to repay it. Vishal, who knew that Sharath came from a well-to-do family, hatched a plan to kidnap him to make money. The victim also asked his parents not to file a police complaint. Sharath is believed to have been strangulated a couple of days after he was kidnapped, said police.
