Charleston police responding to 'active shooter situation'

A disgruntled ex-employee has taken hostages at a restaurant in a tourist area in Charleston, South Carolina, said the city's mayor.

Charleston police reportedly told store owners to call their employees and tell them not to return to the office until police report everything is clear.

"We do ask our community's prayers for one family today, because one person has been killed today", Mayor Tecklenburg said.

Tecklenberg said that the violence was not terrorism or a hate crime, and added that the suspect was a disgruntled employee.

Police in Charleston, S.C., have cordoned off a block as they deal with an "active shooter" situation.

Interim Charleston Police Chief Jerome Taylor says all the hostages at Virginia's restaurant were rescued safely.

According to the Independent, "Police officers engaged for hours in a tense standoff with the still-unidentified shooter, who holed up with multiple hostages inside a downtown Charleston restaurant".

Police, according to CNN, ordered people in nearby businesses to evacuate.

A family were having lunch at the eatery when they tell the Charleston Post and Courier a middle-aged man emerged from the kitchen brandishing a loaded revolver and announced, 'There's a new boss in town'.

A patron that was inside Virginia's when the shooter walked in described him as "an ordinary grandpa, but he had a insane look".

One customer ran out back door.

Local reports said the police department sent SWAT teams and a bomb disposal unit to the area.
