  • Whole Foods stores are set to be taken over by Amazon later this year after their merger deal got FTC approval

Amazon announced that its Prime membership service will soon become Whole Foods' new customer rewards program and that certain Whole Foods-brand groceries will be available for purchase on Amazon's website.

Among other Whole Foods items getting discounts Monday: avocados, tilapia, baby kale, apples and rotisserie chicken — all organic, Amazon said. The two companies will invent in additional areas over time, including in merchandising and logistics, to enable lower prices for Whole Foods Market customers. German discount grocers like Lidl and Aldi are expanding in the US and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has been investing in more discounts too.

Wilke plans to reduce the costs of items like salmon, bananas, brown eggs, lean ground beef and more.

The approval came on Wednesday - the same day shareholders of the Whole Foods chain approved the $13.7 billion deal that would make Amazon a bigger player in the grocery business.

You'll be able to buy Whole Foods' private label products on Amazon Prime.

"There was a lot of speculation that Whole Foods might be left as more of an independent entity, at least in the beginning phases of the acquisition", she said. Now, in a press release this morning, Amazon has announced its expectation to assume full control of Whole Foods on next Monday, August 28th-along with a series of strategic moves likely to shake the grocery industry to its core.

Select Whole Foods stores will also begin adding Amazon Lockers, where customers can pick up online orders or drop off returns.

Whole Foods will lower prices on groceries, once the deal is completed next week, the companies said Thursday. A Morgan Stanley survey earlier this month found that Whole Foods prices were down slightly from previous year, but that they still averaged roughly 15% higher than regional supermarkets. At the time of the announcement of the deal in June Amazon said it had no plans for layoffs or to automate Whole Foods stores using the technology it is developing for Amazon Go.

Comedian John Oliver, host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight", ridiculed Whole Food's pricing in a memorable 2015 sketch. Actual results could differ materially from those projected or forecast in the forward-looking statements.
