Fancy Bear football hack leaves unanswered questions

  • Fancy Bears leak: Five British football stars tested positive for cocaine or ecstasy in 2015 according to documents

Their sports arm has hacked the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and the IAAF, the world athletics governing body, releasing medical documents belonging to British athletes including Mo Farah, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.

The documents also suggest that 160 players failed drugs tests in 2015 and that four of these incidents were in the UK.

Soccer officials are working to discover the extent of information released by Russian hacking group Fancy Bears which has made revelations about football's anti-doping procedures.

The hacker group Fancy Bears has published a list of players who were allegedly allowed to use banned substances at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

TUEs allow athletes to use otherwise banned substances to treat existing medical conditions but some experts believe they are administered when not really needed medically but when they could provide a competitive advantage.

Fancy Bears first hacked World Anti-Doping Agency files in September previous year.

Fancy Bear frequently uses websites and emails that appear to be operated by the software giant to trick users into revealing their passwords.

Tigers' Ian Kinsler fined $10K for comments about umpire Angel Hernandez
That said, the umpires are conveniently ignoring that players aren't the only ones who escalate situations on the field. He worked last year's National League Championship Series and the Division Series in 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Omnisport has contacted Federation Internationale de Football Association and WADA for comment.

WADA has denied that Fancy bears' information was obtained from a hack into their system.

"It is further ordered that defendants are in default, and that judgment is awarded in favor of Microsoft and against defendants", the filing by the US District Court for the Eastern District stated.

The espionage group were held liable for downloading, storing and releasing the information containing data on the athletes' Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) documents.

Neither the doping records nor the TUE list have been verified.

"This criminal activity undertaken by the cyber espionage group, which seeks to undermine the TUE program and the work of WADA and its partners in the protection of clean sport, is a clear violation of athletes' rights".
